Goodman Fielder School of the Year Winners Announced
Frimley Primary School's constant pursuit of excellence and success for its students has received national recognition
with it being named the overall Goodman Fielder School of the Year as well as Goodman Fielder Large Primary/Intermediate
School of the Year.
The Hastings school receives $50,000 cash and the supreme trophy for its achievements in 2001. Frimley Primary School
also won the Goodman Fielder Large Primary/Intermediate School of the Year Award in 1997 - the Award's inaugural year.
Chairman of the judging panel, Sir Michael Hardie Boys, says Frimley Primary School clearly demonstrated quality
education initiatives and outcomes in all aspects of its entry.
"The school continues to demonstrate outstanding progress in academic achievement, while its use of technology across
the curriculum is an inspiration for all schools," he says.
Managing Director of Goodman Fielder New Zealand Ltd, Ron Vela, says since the Awards' inception in 1997 Goodman Fielder
has seen first hand the increasing excellence achieved by schools throughout the country.
"What is very evident is that this year's winning schools are true leaders in excellence and innovation - attributes New
Zealand must continue to develop as a competitive country," says Mr Vela. The overall winning school was selected from
the five category winners. The four other category winners are Aokautere School, Palmerston North (best small primary/
intermediate), Mountain View Primary School, Mangere (best medium primary/ intermediate), Nayland College, Nelson (best
secondary), and Mt Anglem College, Invercargill (best composite school).
Each category winner receives $10,000 cash and a trophy with the overall winner an additional $40,000. The two
runners-up in each category receive $1000 and a certificate - a total prize pool of $100,000.
Past winning schools are Mt Roskill Grammar School (1997), Richmond Primary School (1998) Patearoa School and Piopio
College (joint overall winners 1999), and Auckland Girls' Grammar (2000).
The principal and a student representative from each of the 14 finalist schools were in Wellington today for the
ceremony at Te Papa attended by Her Excellency the Governor General Dame Silvia and Minister of Education the Hon Trevor
Mallard.
Joining Sir Michael on the judging panel were internationally acclaimed educational resources and book publisher Wendy
Pye, Managing Director of Goodman Fielder New Zealand Limited, Ron Vela, April Bruce, and educationalists Pat Riley and
John Boyens.
