NCEA allowance defined
A key component of the proposed Secondary Teachers’ Collective Agreement has been clarified and defined further.
The new wording of the proposed National Certificate of Educational Achievement allowance could mean that more teachers
will qualify for the allowance than originally anticipated.
The clarification comes on the eve of the first ratification meeting to be held in Lower Northland tomorrow.
PPTA president Jen McCutcheon said today that PPTA and the Ministry of Education had been working hard over the past
three days to get some agreement on what is a major component of the proposed collective agreement.
“The clarification means that the allowance is now broader and includes teachers who are working on NCEA Levels 1, 2 and
3 in unit and achievement standards based subjects. Previously it only covered teachers working on achievement standards
based subjects.”
“There had been a considerable amount of anxiety surrounding this element of the proposed collective, we are hopeful now
that this clarifies the situation,” Mrs McCutcheon said.
“While we cannot specify how many members this allowance would now cover, it was a great concern that previous to this
the allowance would only be received by 80 percent of our members. The clarification means that those people who are
working exclusively in subjects that are unit standard based will now be covered. It broadens the scope of it,” Mrs
McCutcheon said.
