AUT has an outstanding Women's Hockey team going to the Centennial New Zealand University Games in Hamilton, April
25-27.
The formidable squad has high numbers of national and international representatives.
It is AUT's first year with a full team at the Student Uni Travel Games and they expect to win Women's Hockey.
Dedication and months of preparation has transformed the AUT Women's Hockey team into an unyielding unit
AUT Hockey Coach (former Blacksticks Player) Anna Lawrence stated, "This years team is the best we have ever sent to the
Uni Games. The team's goals for 2002 are to increase the awareness of women's hockey, bring back the gold medal, earn
points for AUT to go towards the shield, and have a great tournament".
It will be the closest Student Travel Uni Games ever with similarly sized teams from all the large campuses.
The Student Uni Travel Games originated in 1902 as an Easter Tournament hosted by Canterbury against Auckland, Otago,
and Victoria in athletics, tennis and debating. Debating and Tennis are still in the program. The University Games are
steeped in tradition and are a celebration of student life, culture and sporting achievement.
One hundred years on, "Easter Tourney" has had a name change and now includes 28 sports. The sports are varied, from
Rugby to Underwater Hockey. Karate competitors are being selected from this event for the World University Karate Team.
