The Waikato usit BEYOND Travel University Games, April 25 – 27, is projected to have over 3,000 participants according
to a recent meeting of team managers. This is a third more than the 2001 usit Games in Dunedin. It would make the
Waikato usit Games the biggest University games yet.
“I am very excited that we will have so many students competing and enjoying the camaraderie of tertiary sport”, said
Darel Hall President of University Sport New Zealand.
“It is partly due to the excellent usit Games we had in Dunedin last year. The Waikato people saw how well that went and
are determined to top it. The Waikato team are working hard to ensure a top sporting and social programme.
“The increase comes about as the top of the North Island teams are excited by the usit Games, want to win, and are
preparing their biggest teams ever. The Auckland University Student Movement (students from the Auckland University of
Technology) will field a full team for the first time.
“These projections do not include the likely participation of polytechnic or college of education students that will
happen this year. I am very keen to see the mettle of students from such institutions as Waikato Institute of Technology
and the Auckland College of Education.
“We are recapturing the majesty of student sport in terms of excellence in performance of student athletes and the sheer
good fun and exuberance that comes from participation. Our continued work on host responsibility is part of our strategy
to seek greater professionalism in how we manage tertiary sport for students, while retaining the spirited student
edge,” Mr Hall concluded.
