TELECOM HELPS LINWOOD INTERMEDIATE SCHOOL STUDENTS GET THEIR HOMEWORK DONE @ THE CLICK OF A MOUSE
Homework should take on a new meaning for students at Linwood Intermediate School thanks to Telecom’s new fast and free Internet connections to the school’s Study Support Centre.
Linwood Intermediate School is part of the Government’s Digital Opportunities project, where Government and business have teamed up to help provide access to information and communications technology for those who might miss out.
“Telecom is delighted to connect the Study Support Centre up to the online world using Telecom’s high speed internet service Jetstream,” Telecom General Manager Government and Industry Relations Bruce Parkes said.
“Telecom hopes the technology will bring a new slant to how some students feel about homework - it should get more interesting, faster and fun. Students at the Study Support Centre can use the high data speeds to access all sorts of different technologies and information.
“This is a fantastic opportunity for kids to get skills and access to information and communications technology that they wouldn’t have in their homes,” Mr Parkes said.
Telecom has been working with the Government, the school and other partners in the project – Compaq, Microsoft, Renaissance, Te Kete Ipurangi, Vodafone and NewZealand Post - to get new digital opportunities into schools and communities.
“The great thing about this is that it isn’t only students at the school who can tap into this technology. The Government and the business partners want parents, and others in the community to get use out of the centre when students aren’t there,” Mr Parkes said.
Linwood Intermediate School is one of three South Island Schools involved in the two-year Digital Opportunities pilot project.
The Minister of Education will open the online Study Support Centre today. (4.30pm Thursday 31 May 2001)
