More Than Nine Out Of 10 Trustees
Recommend Standing At Elections
Nominations for Trustee Elections 2001 open tomorrow (Feb 28) – and campaign organisers have welcomed latest figures
that show that 96 percent of current trustees would recommend the role to others.
National Election Co-ordinator Janet Kelly says the findings are excellent and the next step is making sure people
listen to that recommendation by standing in the March election.
The election, which is New Zealand’s biggest democratic event, involves filling a total of 14,000 parent-elected seats
at 2,650 schools around the country.
Janet Kelly says while early indications show that the majority of schools are well placed for the elections, it is
important that there isn’t any complacency.
She says the next two weeks while nominations are open is vital for all schools.
“Boards and schools have been working hard in the lead-up to the election and this hard work should pay off during the
nomination period. However if any schools find that they need some help in attracting people to stand they should be
asking for it now – it will be too late once the nominations close on March 16.”
Janet Kelly says there couldn’t be a stronger endorsement of being on a board than the fact that almost all trustees
would recommend the role.
“These people know what the role involves and the real benefits in being involved with your children’s education. Being
a trustee is a challenging and rewarding role and the board does make a real difference to their school community.”
The common election date is March 30.
