Statistics New Zealand Maori Scholars Announced: February 2001
Statistics New Zealand is delighted to announce Jamie Pou and Waimatua Morris as the recipients of the 2001 Te Tari
Tatau Scholarship. The annual scholarship which is for tertiary study, preferably in mathematics or statistics, is open
to all Mäori residents. It is valued at $3,500 per annum for up to three years.
Brian Pink, Government Statistician said "I am excited by the talent and ability demonstrated by the candidates. Because
of the high calibre of the applicants, two scholarships have been awarded."
Jamie Pou, of Ngä Puhi, Te Rarawa, Ngäti Whatua descent, is studying at Auckland University for a joint Bachelor of
Science and Commerce degree. Jamie is a speaker of te reo Mäori.
Waimatua Morris, of Ngäti Kahungunu descent, is studying at Massey University. She is undertaking a joint degree,
majoring in Science and Business Studies with papers in statistics and sport management. Waimatua is fluent in te reo
Mäori and has a "full immersion" educational background, progressing through köhanga reo and kura kaupapa. She will
continue Mäori language studies at university.
The scholarship programme seeks to increase the number of Mäori statisticians and those with related disciplines
available for employment at Statistics New Zealand. Paid vacation work is available to the recipients and they are
expected to spend a minimum of six weeks per year working at Statistics New Zealand.
