9000 Trustees Say They Are Thinking About Doing It Again
Organisers of the Trustees Election 2001 have announced almost one half of sitting board of trustee members will stand
again at next March’s election.
A further 18 percent say they are thinking of standing again, taking the total number of trustees who are considering
standing again to about 9,000. There are currently 14,000 parent-elected representatives holding places on boards at the
2,650 schools nation-wide.
National Project Manager Janet Kelly says it is excellent news that such a high proportion of trustees are willing to
show their commitment again. Trustees with experience give the new board continuity and a better understanding of the
processes.
However Janet Kelly says the news also sends a challenge to all schools to make sure they are gearing up to fill the
vacancies left by those who aren’t in a position to stand again.
“These upcoming elections provide schools with a wonderful opportunity to look around their school community to see who
would make great trustees, and who may be able to make valuable contributions in helping determine the direction of the
school.”
Janet Kelly says boards play a huge role in schools, and it is important as many people as possible are encouraged to
put their names forward.
“We want New Zealanders from all walks of life to ‘Stand and Be Counted’. To ensure this happens, it is vital that as
many people as possible are aware of the elections, and the importance of coming forward.”
She says one of the main reasons parents decide to get involved in their board is because they want to take an active
role in their children’s education, and have input in to the direction of the school.
“Simply by putting your name forward for nomination you are sending a clear message to your child or children that
education does matter and is important.”
Nominations open on February 28, while the common election date is March 30.
