Free Video Explains Role Of Canz Recycled Computers In Schools
A new video program released by Computer Access NZ Trust (CANZ) explains how professionally recycled PCs can be used in
schools, and when it is appropriate to use them.
The programme, 'Horses for Courses - choosing computers for your school', is free to New Zealand schools on request.
It was produced with support from the Ministry of Education, which supports the concept of recycled computer use through
its ICT strategy for schools.
The video shows how recycled 486 and older Pentium machines are being used successfully in network situations for 'bulk'
activities such as word processing and spreadsheeting.
Recycled computers cost about $1,000 less per machine than new machines, and Rutherford College, featured in the video,
put its savings toward a new suite of Pentium IIIs now being used for high-end graphics activities, including CAD. Also
shown are CANZ recycled computers in a small network 'pod' at Waterview Primary School.
The video demonstrates the recycling process at Auckland's The Ark, one of two recycling companies accredited by CANZ.
EdCom ICT specialist Douglas Harre discusses appropriate software and network configurations for recycled computers.
CANZ was formed last year as an initiative of the 2020 Communications Trust, supported by the Ministry of Education. It
sets standards for recycled computers and accredits companies which meet these standards and provide warranties and
after-sale service. The two accredited companies are The Ark in Auckland, and the PC Recycling Channel in Wellington.
They refurbish older machines donated by business and government organisations.
While most CANZ computers go to schools, they are also available for not-for-profit community groups. They are also
being used in two pilot 'Computers in Homes' programmes in association with Panmure Bridge and Cannons Creek schools in
Auckland and Wellington respectively.
