MEDIA RELEASE - For Immediate Use
"GOD SAVE VIC - NO-ONE ELSE WILL"
Sunday, July 16th, 2000 Members of the Victoria University Education Action Group (EAG) will drop a banner from the top floor of the University Library at 2 pm on Sunday to draw attention to the financial crisis at the University. The 10 x 2 m banner, reading 'GOD SAVE VIC' will be visible from the central city..
"The financial crisis at Victoria, and at Universities around the country is a result of continued government under-funding. We are calling on the government to take responsibility to resolve this crisis." Said EAG spokesperson Nick Henry.
"The problem has been building up for years as government funding per student has declined. While student numbers were increasing, Universities have been able to compensate by enrolling more students, and letting staff-student ratios fall. Now that the number of students has decreased, the underlying crisis in the level of government funding has been exposed."
The banner drop marks the beginning of the second term of the academic year, and the start of an EAG campaign against cuts to academic staff and programs and for adequate government funding of Universities.
