Scarfies Capping Procession Returns
The Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) is proud to announce the return of the Otago University Capping
procession.
The original capping procession which ran from 1899 through to 1987 when it was discontinued due to lack of support.
"Dunedin has had to wait too long for the return of this truly historical event. I am very pleased that the association
has got behind the project again and breathed new life into an Otago cultural tradition", said Andrew Campbell OUSA
President.
The Capping Procession and the Capping Show have historically been the focal events of the Otago University capping
festivities. The capping procession was renowned for its raucousness and vibrancy.
"The support we have received is amazing. The number of people who previously took part in the procession who have come
out of the woodwork to help is unbelievable. It is important Dunedin and its students reclaim this event and carry it on
for another 100 years", said Campbell.
The parade will consist largely of floats from the University's Halls of Residence, and OUSA affiliated sports clubs.
The parade will also include the return of the capping pipe band.
"I encourage all Dunedin residents to come out tomorrow and salute the graduates and enjoy the procession. This years
event will surly grow if the city gets in behind it", said Campbell.
The procession leaves the front of the Dentistry school at 1.15 pm Saturday May 6th, and processes down George Street to
the Octagon where prizes will be awarded.
