Student Support for TEAC Chair
The Otago University Students' Association (OUSA) welcomed today the appointment of Norman Kingsbury as Chair of the
Tertiary Education Advisory Commission (TEAC).
"The Government has made a astute decision in appointing someone who has not only an enormous breadth of knowledge of
the tertiary education sector, but also an understanding of the different groups involved in it makeup", said Andrew
Campbell OUSA President.
Mr Kingsbury has had a long involvement in Tertiary Education, starting in student politics, which saw him head the
secretariat of the International Student Conference, through to his contribution in the establishment of Waikato
University. Mr Kingsbury has also had association with Polytechnics and is currently the Chief Executive of the New
Zealand Qualifications Authority (NZQA).
"It is clear Mr Kingsbury has an enormous task ahead of him. The tertiary education system is in disarray after ten
years of Government attacks. TEAC needs to provide the Government with sound advise to ensure that tertiary education is
accessible to all, and that the quality of New Zealand degrees be of a world standard", said Mr Campbell.
"Students are relying on this Government to provide a better tertiary education system. The appointment of Mr Kingsbury
as Chair of TEAC is a good start, but must be followed up with major policy initiatives and changes", said Campbell
