Statistics New Zealand Pacific Islands Scholar Announced
Statistics New Zealand is delighted to announce Lee-Ann Nanai as the recipient of their year 2000 Pacific Islands
Scholarship.
Lee-Ann Nanai, who is of Samoan ethnic descent, is in the second year of her degree studying for a Bachelor of Science
at Canterbury University. She intends to major in both maths and statistics. Ms Nanai is also significantly involved in
the Samoan community.
Government Statistician, Len Cook said, "This is our second Samoan scholar and I am impressed by the range of talent and
abilities exhibited by these young people. Our longer term aim is to increase the number of Pacific Islands
statisticians and those with related disciplines available for employment at Statistics New Zealand."
Statistics New Zealand awards the Pacific Islands Scholarship every three years. The scholarship is open to all Pacific
Islands people resident in New Zealand and has a value of $3,500 per year for up to three years. Paid vacation work is
available to the recipients and they are expected to spend a minimum of six weeks per year working at Statistics New
Zealand.
