Statistics New Zealand Maori Scholars Announced
Statistics New Zealand is delighted to announce Faye Williams as the year 2000 Te Tari Tatau scholarship recipient. The
annual scholarship for tertiary study, preferably in mathematics or statistics, is open to all Maori residents. It is
valued at $3,500 a year for up to three years.
Faye Williams, of Ngapuhi descent, is studying for a Bachelor of Applied Science at Northland Polytechnic, Whangarei.
She already holds a Certificate in Business Computing. Ms Williams will be offered paid vacation work and is expected to
spend at least six weeks a year at Statistics New Zealand.
Darren Whiu of Ngati Maniapoto and Ngapuhi has also been awarded a special grant to complete a Diploma in Mathematics at
the University of Waikato. Mr Whiu is a fluent Maori speaker. This award was granted because of the rare and
particularly useful subject combination for the teaching of statistics in the Maori community.
"It is heartening to see the range of talent and abilities exhibited by the candidates," says Government Statistician
Len Cook. "Our longer term aim is to increase the number of Maori statisticians and those with related disciplines
available for employment at Statistics New Zealand."
