Call out to New Zealand’s Freedivers

Published: Tue 21 May 2019 09:16 AM
If you’re looking to test your pool freediving mettle, want to hone your breath holding skills or just experience the thrill of a freediving competition, this year’s Ocean Hunter Wellington Winter Championships will be held June 8 - 9, 2019 at the sparkling Te Rauparaha Arena, Porirua.
Organisers are expecting about 30 athletes to participate, including the country’s top freedivers. There will be a recreation grade available for those new to competitive freediving. We encourage everyone to get involved – it’s never too early to have a go! Divers in the recreation grade will compete in the same disciplines, but with relaxed rules. These dives will not be eligible for international ranking, but will appear on the Freediving New Zealand Recreational Grade Ranking on the Freediving New Zealand website.
The two-day competition will cover the disciplines of static apnea, Dynamic No Fins (DNF) and Dynamic With Fins (DYN). The event is open to competitors from all nationalities. Awards will be handed out to the top three in each men’s and women’s event. The Lazy Seals would like to thank and recognise Ocean Hunter Wellington as sponsors.
Many of the club's active members will be taking part in either the competitive grade or the recreational grade for newcomers. It is also a great opportunity for people curious about the sport to see the country's best exponents in action.
Freediving is a wonderful sport where at one moment athletes are trying their utmost in the water to give their best performance and at the next, coaching someone else to reach their peak performance.
If you’re looking to compete, you’d better hurry – registrations are filling up fast.
