RUSSIAN-KIWI SONGWRITER’S NEW SONG REFERENCES 1970S FEMINIST NOVEL.
Russian-born kiwi singer/songwriter Marina Bloom is releasing her latest single ‘Flying’.
The songs theme was inspired by the 1973 novel ‘Fear of Flying’ by Erica Jong, hailed for its contribution to second-wave feminism.
Marina Bloom is an inspiring vocalist having performed throughout New Zealand playing at such seminal venues as Auckland Town Hall, The Kings Arms, Kapiti Coast Winery, The Vic Devonport, and Summer festivals up and down the country.
She sings in two languages –English and Russian– and loves to perform as lead vocalist with the Russian-language choir ‘Singing Nations’. Her music is a broad mix of pop, country and rock but also incorporates elements of world music.
Currently in the studio working on her new album ‘Back Where We Started’, Marina says of her songwriting process for ‘Flying’:
“When Michael (Davis, the lyricist) showed me the lyrics I heard the chorus melody in my head straight away. Then working with Carl (Benton, the arranger) to get a full sound, it got very epic, very fast! Making music is about who you work with, my melodies are always amplified by the music that supports it.”
Marina will be bringing her multicultural, cross-genre music to Auckland with ‘A Night To Remember’ at Anthology Lounge on May 26.
