Swanky Comedy meets savage roasting

Published: Tue 2 Apr 2019 03:05 PM
April 13th will see the debut of two amazing shows in Auckland for the first time ever at Backbeat on K Road. At 8pm there’s Swanky Comedy Evening, a charity show with a handful of NZ finest young pro comedians hosted by Brendhan Lovegrove. At 10pm is Roast Battle, the smash hit sell-out comedy format with nothing off limits.
MC’d by one of New Zealand’s greatest comedians Brendhan Lovegrove, the Swanky Comedy Evening at 8pm stars a bunch of comedians you should know. Billy T Winner David Correos headlines with James Mustapic (2019 Billy T Nominee), Natalie Samy and Josiah Day. It’s an absolute guarantee of a good night as they’re the cream of the crop and the absolute antithesis of ‘swanky’. And not content letting musicians do all the good work, all proceeds of the show will go to the Our People, Our City fund for Christchurch.
Based on the hit format created by Jeff Ross and Brian Moses and broadcast on Comedy Central, the competitive insult comedy show ‘Roast Battle’ will be premiering in Auckland at 10pm. Roast Battle started in New Zealand in 2016 and has since expanded to sell out shows in Christchurch, Dunedin and Hamilton in 2018.
The format is simple: eight brave stand-up comedians – a mix of local and national acts – compete in a match of wit and insults by trading insult jokes at each other, commonly known as ‘roasts’. With no subject off limits, anything can happen. Each battle is simple: two comedians go head to head on stage taking turns throwing their best roasts at each other, and Brendhan Lovegrove and David Correos passing judgment and deciding the winner. After three brutal rounds of elimination, one comedian will be left standing as Roast Battle Champion. Roast Battle has only three rules: original material only, no physical contact, and every battle ends with a hug.
