Manatū Taonga, the Ministry for Culture and Heritage welcomes expressions of interest from architects, artists,
landscape architects and designers, for the National Erebus Memorial planned to mark the 40th anniversary since the
accident.
“Government has approved $3 million in funding for the establishment of this Memorial, which will be a fitting place for
remembrance, reflection and contemplation,” says acting Chief Executive Manatū Taonga, Ministry for Culture and Heritage
Renee Graham.
“The National Erebus Memorial will honour the 257 passengers and crew who were aboard the flight, and provide a place
where people can come to pay their respects.
“Manatū Taonga is now accepting expressions of interest for the Memorial’s design, which is likely to be located in
Auckland,” said Renee Graham.
She says it’s appropriate to commemorate the victims of one of this country’s most tragic events, and for the Memorial
to be in Auckland.
“This will be well-received by many family members of the Erebus victims and acknowledges the departure location of the
flight.
“Manatū Taonga is working with Auckland Council, iwi, local government and community groups to select an appropriate
site,” said Renee Graham.
“The Ministry is also working with the families of those who lost loved ones, and other interested groups, towards the
creation of the Memorial in 2020.
“The design brief includes ideas and information from those families and groups about what they would like the Memorial
to include.
“I am pleased the design process is now underway,’ said Renee Graham.
Expressions of Interest can be submitted until 25 November 2018. Details about the design brief, decision selection
