Alt-country/indie act Anxiety Club will release their new EP ‘Black Heart’ on Friday 19th October 2018. The 5-song EP
will be available from Bandcamp, iTunes, Spotify and other good streaming platforms.
The EP was recorded by James Goldsmith (Mermaidens, Nadia Reid, Beastwars) at Blue Barn Studios in Newtown, Wellington,
and mastered by Pete Maher (Lana Del Ray, The Killers, U2) in the UK.
Title track ‘Black Heart’, is a widescreen desert song about temptation and heartache of which Chris Isaak would be
proud. It features a sublime guest vocal performance by Kim Bonnington, and horns – by way of Calexico - courtesy of
Chris Winter (Eb & Sparrow).
The remainder of the EP features songs that have become live favourites over the last couple of years performing around
the country. ‘Holes in my Skin’ – inspired by the James K Baxter poem The Maori Jesus – blends an homage to Wellington
with a sound that could have originated in Asbury Park with Springsteen’s E Street Band. Elsewhere, there are touches of
Nick Cave (‘Lonely Night’), Wilco (‘I give in’) and Ryan Adams-esque country balladry (‘Love Rescue Me’).
The end result is music that is more accessible and cohesive than it’s slightly left-field and diverse origins may
suggest. Kev Fitzsimon’s impressive voice, supported by an able team of musicians and sharp songwriting, make this a
release well worth adding to your “must check out” list this month.
