The upcoming on and off court action of The Hobbiton™ Movie Set Cup
The WBOP Magic are looking forward to the SKYCITY Mystics making an ‘expected journey’ down SH1 to face the Magic in Round 8 of the ANZ Premiership, where a special new trophy will be on the line.
Bought to life by Magic partners Hobbiton™ Movie Set and designed by Weta Workshops, the ‘Hobbiton Movie Set Cup’ (imagery available on request) will bring a physical element to what has always been considered a special rivalry between the two teams, and provide an exciting match day experience for Magic fans.
Claudelands Arena will undergo a full ‘Shire-like’ makeover in preparation for the match with Weta Workshops starting the build 2 days in advance to ensure the ultimate immersive experience for fans.
The WBOP Magic will also be wearing a special, one-off Hobbiton themed dress, the first time that any ANZ Premierships has worn a bespoke dress design on court. Designed by Hobbiton and signed off by Warner Bros in the US, the dress includes iconic imagery from the film and provides a visible connection for the team with one of Waikato’s local icons.
The event has been garnering international attention with the world famous tourist attraction excited to be working with the WBOP Magic team and looking forward to bringing a real slice of the Middle-Earth magic to life.
To help bring this unique event to Netball fans throughout New Zealand, SKY Sport’s Netball Zone will be broadcast live from Claudelands Arena at conclusion of the match.
In addition to the on court excitement there will be a range of special off court activities throughout Claudelands Arena for fans including:
A limited edition WBOP Magic match day poster.
Best Dressed competition for fans - come dressed in theme to win some great prizes.
A Hobbit hole in the foyer of Claudelands Arena for fans to see and take photos with.
Marian Burns, the Hobbiton Fiddle Player, will be playing in the foyer pre- match and at on-court at half time.
Corporate Hospitality will be serving speciality brews from Hobbiton’s Green Dragon Inn.
WBOP Magic players will be available for phone interviews on Monday and Tuesday this week as well as the usual access post-match on Wednesday night.
