A Scandalous, All Female & Completely Nude Literary Event Comes to AKL
Naked Girls Reading: The Smut Edition promises to be an unmissable celebration of diverse bodies, saucy literature and,
of course, empowered naked women. It runs at Caluzzi Bar & Cabaret for one night only on Thursday June 21st 2018.
Naked Girls Reading, a Wellington borne show is finally coming to Auckland with a bang! It features unclad talent from
all across New Zealand and a hilarious selection of smut themed literature so raunchy it’ll ‘tit’ilate your senses and
leave you gasping for more. As a show that aims to de-stigmatise, normalise and celebrate the female body in all its
forms, it’s a event you won’t want to miss.
The show is hosted and created by Hugo Grrrl (pictured below), who is a nationally acclaimed Drag King and the alter-ego
of comedy and cabaret producer George Fowler. As a trans person, George aims to make the show as inclusive as possible
and has the unique ability to create a space that welcomes everyone and facilitates the much needed conversation around
censorship and women’s bodies.
The production’s star-studded cast (as pictured) features Kikki Kisses: a local pin-up vixen and award winning burlesque
performer, Sarita Das: a Somatic Sex Educator, and Miss Bettsy Rose Lee (HAMILTON): an acclaimed performer with 8 years
of burlesque experience. These unclad, clever ladies have picked their favourite bits of iconic erotic literature to
recite for you. Expect excerpts of everything from The Happy Hooker to Lolita, Fifty Shades to Pablo Neruda, the Song of
Solomon to the ethics of modern pornography.
‘If anything, it’s a comedy show,’ says MC Hugo Grrrl. ‘Each edition we bring together a group of kick-ass viciously
funny, whip-smart women and get them to read and talk about stories they’re passionate about. It’s a recipe for a
wonderful disaster.’ ‘People often come into it thinking it’s going to be a very glamorous and traditionally sexy
affair, and they’re not wrong. But we’re also going to yell about feminism and our feelings for ninety minutes. The show
really isn’t about nudity or titillation at all. It’s about normalising and desexualising the naked female form and
celebrating bodies and their stories.’
Miss Bettsy, who will be performing for the first time on June 21st, defines herself as “larger than life and larger
than socially acceptable”, is excited to be a part of NGR “after decades of society telling her that she should neither
be seen nor heard.”
Previous cast member Belle La’Rose, who performed in one of the Wellington shows said: “For me NGR was nerve racking,
empowering and educational, my co-stars were fantastic and I felt as though the audience came to show support and love
for the idea. It made me feel sexy and confident in my own skin.”
Naked Girls Reading: The Smut Edition runs for one night only at 7.30pm at Caluzzi Cabaret (Thursday 21st June 2018).
The show runs bi-monthly throughout the year and future shows include Crime & Punishment (August 9th) , and Pride (October
