Visibility Paradigm Exhibition at Unitec’s Gallery One as part of Auckland Festival of Photography
Auckland, May 24, 2018 – The Visibility Paradigm Exhibition curated by Unitec photography lecturer Allan McDonald will
feature as part of the 2018 Auckland Festival of Photography Control theme taking place between May 25 and June 13.
The exhibition features work from Unitec Creative Industries lecturers William Bardebes and Emma Smith, as well as
Caryline Boreham, Sheryl Campbell, Solomon Mortimer, Yvonne Shaw, Hayley Theyers, Carly van Winkel and Chris Young. The
opening night of the exhibition is this evening (Thursday, May 24) from 5-7pm.
Curator Allan McDonald recently won the New Zealand Photobook of the Year Award, with Carbon Empire by Rim Books.
“The theme of control has been selected by the festival as a response to the rapidly increasing advance of camera
surveillance technologies in the digital age”, said Mr McDonald. “I thought it would be interesting to take a broad
tangential approach to this
central idea, particularly given the history of the building the gallery resides in.”
“The different projects in the exhibition bear the imprint of the artist’s individual subjectivities and histories and
as such explore a range of dynamics between visibility and control. These range from a typology of prison architecture
through to subtle interplays such as might exist in a look between two people,” Mr McDonald added.
A panel discussion running parallel to the exhibition features Dr Leon Tan, William Bardebes, Allan McDonald, Dr Nina
Seja and Dr Scott Wilson and will be hosted in Gallery One on Sat 9 June from 1-2pm. It will take place inside a camera
obscura under a veil of semi-darkness to play with conventions of visibility, the camera and the photographic audience.
The discussion will examine notions of visibility, power and the camera in the age of face recognition technology.

Gallery One will be open daily from 9.30am-4pm Monday-Friday and is located inside the main entrance of Building 1 on
Unitec’s Mt Albert campus.
