Wellycon, New Zealand’s biggest and friendliest annual board game convention, will open its doors again this year at
Wellington Girls’ College for its 11th edition. On Queen’s Birthday weekend, 2-3 June 2018, it will welcome over 600
board gamers of all ages to learn new games, play favourites, compete in tournaments, win prizes and make new friends.
Christoph Martens, Wellycon committee member, explains “This year we chose the theme Vikings in honour of local
Wellingtonian Shem Phillips, who was nominated at the prestigious Spiel des Jahres (game of the year) awards with his
game Raiders of the North Sea. We are excited to have him at Wellycon this year to show everyone his new designs and
take part in a game designer panel. Shem specifically designed a limited edition promo card for Wellycon, based on our
chairperson Ceedee Doyle, which will be given to every attendee”.
“It’s all about the atmosphere. We have a great community; people look out for each other, get stuck in, play some great
games and get to know some new friends. They really enjoy the vast library of hundreds of games brought along by the
attendees, which are always at the centre of Wellycon.” adds Ceedee Doyle, chair of Wellycon. “A major draw card will be
the Play-to-Win section, where you can try out a game and have the chance to win it and take it home. Games at Wellycon
meet all your board-gaming needs from quick easy ones, to those that develop critical thinking to complex, longer games
for dedicated gamers.”
Saturday will see up to 40 players playing the specially designed mega game ‘Watch the Skies’ where players try to
prevent alien infiltration of an alternate Earth in the 1960s. Adrianne Pollock, committee member, is excited to
organise the child-focused session on Sunday from 10am to 12pm. She says “Not only are there heaps of volunteers on hand
to teach family-friendly games, there are also giveaways, and you can play a Viking themed dress-up game, try on
chainmail, and complete a quest for prizes.”
Doors open at 10am on both Saturday and Sunday 2-3 June 2018, and an all-day family pass can be purchased for only $40
(up to 2 adults, children free). A single adult pass is $20 a day or a weekend pass comes to only $35. Early bird
discounts are currently available at www.wellycon.org.nz.
