Valerie books prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe slot

Valerie
books prestigious Edinburgh Festival Fringe slot,
fundraising seasons announced

Friday 18 May, 2018- It has been announced overnight that Last Tapes Theatre Company's original production Valerie has been selected for a month-long season in the prestigious Summerhall programme at Edinburgh Festival Fringe this August. Last Tapes today reveals an ambitious fundraising programme to help take this powerful show to get to the other side of the world, including a long-awaited Auckland return season of Valerie, fundraising concerts and a Boosted fundraising page.

Writer and composer Robin Kelly says that Edinburgh is one of the most exciting arts opportunities in the world and it’s a huge honour to be offered a spot in the festival - even more exciting to be programmed at the highly-respected Summerhall.

"Summerhall has a reputation for programming some of the most interesting and inspiring work in the festival. We can’t wait for Valerie to be seen on the international stage," Kelly said.

"When we first presented Valerie in Auckland in 2016 it was a brand new work at the Auckland Live International Cabaret Festival – we were small and uncertain, but since then the show has blown up. We’ve been all around the country and seen an incredible response, so we’re so excited to bring the show back to Auckland where it all began. And bring it back big – to Q Theatre for a full season."

"Alongside doing Valerie we’re doing a fabulous album launch with my choir Stimmung. A massive flamboyant extravaganza of 30 voices, original songs, special guest artists. It’s all part of our grand farewell to Auckland before hitting the road and taking our show to the other side of the world."

"I'm starting to think about genetics, what's passed on. What isn't. I'm thinking of my grandmother, Valerie."
Named the stand-out cabaret of the year by The New Zealand Herald, Valerie is an inter-generational, interdisciplinary and interrupting piece of theatre that reaches into the guts of family mythologies. Music, genetics and storytelling combine to unravel creator Robin Kelly's family history – and try to shine a light on the future. Since it's debut season at the Auckland Live International Cabaret Festival, Valerie has toured around New Zealand Arts Festivals and to Australia, and now will play for five nights at Q Theatre's Rangitira from17-21 July.
“As close to a perfect piece of theatre as I could think of... so violently to my taste that I wanted to keep it close to me forever” -Sam Brooks, Pantograph Punch
"Beautifully polished, striking, recommended" - NZ Herald
“A challenging, innovative and beautiful piece of work." – Theatre Scenes

Following their past sell-out successes, the much-lauded Stimmung Choir is back for round three.

Now Stimmung are thrilled to introduce you to new New Zealand super-group Neon Warwick and the Bethell Gang by singing songs from their debut album Our Lady of the Flowers.

For two nights only, Stimmung’s 30 voice choir will play host to some of New Zealand’s most exciting special guest artists, accompanied by the cast of Last Tapes’ critically acclaimed Valerie, and other musical guests. This is a night not to be missed.
