Fis & Rob Thorne announce debut New Zealand performance at Club 121 in Wellington, support from PYUR (Germany)
Thu 7 June, Club 121, Wellington, doors open 8pm.
After spending the last two years performing across Europe, sound explorers Fis & Rob Thorne (composer in residence at VUW) will make their debut New Zealand performance together at Wellington’s Club
121 venue on Cuba Mall.
Backed by a reinforced soundsystem, the duo will offer a completely unique sonic dialogue between electronica and tāonga
pūoro - first captured in their breakout album Clear Stones on Berlin’s Subtext Recordings. They will bookend their duo
performance with solo sets - taking us from raw, unamplified acoustics of Rob's tāonga pūoro, to the physicality of Fis’
sound system collages. Fis' solo slot will be an AV performance with Jovan Vucinic - their first full length outing on
home soil having played Modena's NODE Festival, Portugal's Semibreve and Berlin Atonal festivals in recent years.
Following a live commission for Berlin's CTM New Geographies edition in 2016, Thorne and Fis were busy last year,
releasing Clear Stones and touring Europe - taking in London, Leeds, Turin, Milan and Athens' Borderline Festival,
co-billing with Mark Ernestus' Ndagga Rhythm Force, Marginal Consort, and Charlemagne Palestine.
This year, the duo inaugurated Fis' new imprint Saplings Records with their EP Ngā Parirau o te Kārearea. In partnership
with Eden Reforestation projects, Saplings are piloting a 'bio-digital' release format - planting at least 40 trees for
every sale of the EP. Since release, Ngā Parirau o te Kārearea has funded over 8500 trees, and been named one of Fact
Magazine’s favourite releases of the year to date.
Fis & Rob Thorne will be joined by German electronic musician and DJ PYUR (Sophie Schnell). Following her debut album on
Hotflush Recordings, Sophie's emerged quickly as a crucial talent in her own right, performing on Stockhausen's
Oktophonie for Berlin Atonal and sharing bills with Autechre, Atom ™, Lafawndah and Ital Tek.
Presale tickets are available via UTR (link above). More on the night. Limited capacity.
