Wyld’s Ride from Oscars Season to Pilot Season
Hot on the heels of the Oscars, New Zealand actors are packing their bags and heading to Hollywood to try their luck
with auditions for the 2018 Hollywood pilot-season.
That’s where Los Angeles-based Kiwi actor, Jak Wyld differs. He’s made a quick pit-stop, returning to Auckland this
month to shoot a commercial and a mini-series – which has already secured world-wide distribution.
Wyld, who moved to LA last year, never passes up an opportunity to come home and work with local cast and crew, who he
says are some of the best in the world.
“We have a very active and talented industry in New Zealand, and working with them ahead of pilot-season is one of the
best ways I can prep for the auditions ahead”, says Wyld.
He believes that in a constantly growing industry, where content is king and creators like Netflix and Amazon spent over
US$9 billion between them in the 2017 year, there has never been a better time to be in the Hollywood market.
“Gone are the days when only television networks were producing programming. The likes of Netflix, and now Amazon are
responsible for some of our most loved shows, and for every new show they need new talent” he says.
Wyld points out that actors should also consider what their point of difference is besides the obvious abilities. Having
studied martial arts throughout his teens, he spent over a decade in military service with the New Zealand Defence Force
and has specialist weapons training which is a valuable addition to his acting cache.
Before returning to the City of Angels, Wyld plans to visit Te Awamutu College, in Waikato, where he spent his high
school years. Whilst there he will talk to students about his craft and career.
“I love being home and always enjoy an opportunity to talk to youth about what I do. It’s important to share knowledge
and discuss what it’s really like to be an actor. We have such a pool of untapped talent in New Zealand, and our next
shining star could just be waiting to make it big in Te Awamutu”, says Wyld.
Wyld returns to Los Angeles at the end of March.
