Aucklanders in Sydney can now enjoy a taste of one of their favourite cafes from back home after prolific restaurateur
Scott Brown opened his first business across the Tasman.
Brown is the co-founder and co-owner of Hipgroup, which boasts some of Auckland’s most popular eateries in its portfolio
including Amano, Ortolana, Rosie, Kohi Corner and Takapuna Beach Café.
His first Australian business, Good One Café, opened last weekend - just steps from Sydney’s most famous stretch of sand
in the trendy seaside suburb of Bondi Beach.
“Bondi is this wonderful melting pot of locals, tourists and different cultures and sub-cultures so we’ve been conscious
to create an expansive menu that caters for all diets and food preferences," Brown said.
“The same recipe for success that has worked in Auckland will be applied in Sydney, and that’s utilising the best
quality local and seasonal ingredients and focusing on offering the best possible customer service."
Brown has started the business with his Auckland-based brother, Andrew, the former group Marketing Manager now at Air
New Zealand. The Head Chef is Federico Giro, who was in charge of the kitchen at The Store at Britomart and The Waihi
Beach Hotel before moving to Sydney in 2017.
“It’s terrific to have family and plenty of friends involved and we’re confident with some hard work, we can create a
popular neighbourhood café that is loved by locals and is a must-visit for tourists,” added Brown.
As for which city has the better food scene, Brown is careful not to create any trans-Tasman tension.
“Both cities have world-class eateries and we should feel privileged to be in a part of the globe that offers so many
exceptional food and beverage experiences."
