Avis Sponsored Golf Cousins Show Off Their Talents at the LPGA
World recognised golfing cousins Tania Tare and Phillis Meti, will step out for the first time together as
Avis-sponsored athletes this week, at The MCKAYSON New Zealand Women’s Open at Windross Farm Golf Course.
Tare and Meti are both experts in very different specialities within the sport of golf. Meti holds the world long drive
record and Tare is the world’s best-known trick golfer and social media phenomenon with 88 thousand followers on
Instagram and 20 million views on Facebook.
The cousins, were both been given exemptions to play in The Open.
Tare will demonstrate her best tricks in an exhibition at the Fanzone at Windross on Friday at 2pm. Phillis is hoping to
attend, playing schedule permitting.
Tare’s ability to flip clubs and juggle, chip and bounce balls has seen her feature on sports broadcasting giant ESPN,
the PGA show, as well as Golf Channel and Golf Digest. Her attendance at The Open has also attracted significant local
attention in past weeks.
Her approach to identifying new tricks is ‘simple enough that people can try it, but hard enough that they can’t do it’.
Tare is looking forward to the big challenge of stepping up to her first LPGA event. "I tried to play it cool when I was
offered a place but deep down I was pretty excited because not only is it the NZ Open, it's the first LPGA event we've
had here," she said.
“I am feeling a mixture of really excited and nervous at the same time. It’s the kind of opportunity that every golf
player asks for,” she says.
Meti is also excited about the opportunity to step up. “It’s a great honour and if we can attract more young girls to
the game of golf, that will be an added bonus,” she said.
