Curated over a period of 50 years, the collection of Warwick and Kitty Brown comprises over 190 works, spans the breadth of modern and contemporary art practice and features a number of modern masterpieces.
Warwick and Kitty Brown started collecting in the mid-1960s, when contemporary art in New Zealand was in its nascency, and from which a new generation of artists, dealers and intellectuals rapidly emerged. They collected works by their contemporaries, many of whom are now the country’s most valued artists: Colin McCahon, Bill Hammond, Ralph Hotere, Don Binney, Richard Killeen, Tony Fomison, Dick Frizzell, Ian Scott and Robin White to name a few.
“Building this collection has been one of the most satisfying experiences of my life”, states Warwick. “There are so many sides to the activity: learning, risk-taking, supporting artists, sharing, socialising, educating and that nice, warm, feeling one gets when visitors who once puzzled over or dismissed the collection, come to realise its importance to New Zealand’s cultural identity.”
