It took seven albums and 15 years for Washington alt-rockers Death Cab for Cutie to make their first visit to New Zealand for one sold-out concert in March 2012. Today the band announces their return to Wellington almost four years to the day later, before heading north for their very first Auckland show.
The band’s eighth studio album KINTSUGI was released in March, reaching #1 on Billboard’s top rock albums chart. The band has been touring to support the release ever since, with headline dates across the US and Europe and festival appearances including Glastonbury and Splendour in the Grass.
The band is now touring as a five-piece, with the addition of Dave Depper (guitar/keyboards) and Zac Rae (keyboards) replacing founding member Chris Walla on tour. Singer and guitarist Ben Gibbard believes it's the best sounding live version of the band there has ever been.
“It's as much a testament to having a fifth person who can cover all of the elements that we've been unable to cover with only four sets of hands,” Gibbard says. “It's a much bigger sounding band than it was last time, and I'd like to think it's for the best.”
Reviewers around the globe agree, with rave reviews for the live set that includes not only music from KINTSUGI, but the band’s whole back catalogue.
“Death Cab For Cutie put their new five piece lineup through its paces, delivering a perfectly balanced set of hits and more obscure jams from their catalog” - Rolling Stone Australia on DCFC’s Splendour in the Grass set.
“Death Cab for Cutie are still rock stars, and among the last big, inventive guitar bands we have left.” - Los Angeles Times on DCFC’s July Hollywood Bowl concert.
After
extensive touring across the globe to support the release of
KINTSUGI, New Zealand fans can be assured of seeing
one of alternative music’s great bands at their heady
best.
