Lydia Cole crowdfunds sophomore record
September 29, 2015: Newly independent songstress Lydia Cole is putting her sophomore effort in the hands of her fans, taking to Kickstarter to fund her new album.
The Silver Scroll nominee has been in a hibernation of sorts, laying low since her 2012 NZ Top 40 debut Me and Moon – but now the muse has come knocking.
“It’s been ages since I put any music out. Ages since I really wanted to.” Says Cole, “I feel like I spent all these years bumbling around, trying to follow music but not really having the confidence or life experience to know how. I fell in and out of seasons, wrestling with the psychology of it all.
These last couple of years have been about letting it all go. Romance, faith, work, friends, music, identity. I stopped agonising over my fate and just let it lie.”
Cole says venturing out as an independent artist was a vital catalyst for the upcoming project.
“A few months ago I left my management because, after six years, it felt right to stand alone. Immediately, something inside me woke up and songs started coming again. So I left my day job too, to give these songs the space and energy they were asking for.”
The album’s Kickstarter campaign launches today, offering backers a fully-immersive range of perks, from handmade art pieces, to house shows and an evening of Jenga at the pub with Cole.
