Father John Misty In First Ever Zealand Show
“Josh Tillman, aka Father John Misty, has incredible songs bolstered by impeccably ascerbic wit.”* New Zealand fans will get to experience those songs and that wit for themselves when he plays his first ever New Zealand show at Auckland’s St James Theatre on Thursday, December 3.
The prolific folk troubador started releasing music from the age of 21 as J. Tillman, before joining Fleet Foxes as drummer from 2008-2012. He then went solo once again with his first album as Father John Misty Fear Fun. Father John Misty’s sophmore album I Love You, Honeybear was released in February and immediately featured on Pitchfork’s Best New Music and was touted by many in the music press as a contender for the best of 2015 lists.
“It wows the listener outright, swerving confidently around genres and eras, piano balladry and perverse synths, throwing in grandiose string arrangements and enough lyrical grist to keep listeners milling well into 2015.” - The Guardian
In the artist's own words:
“The songs are a narration of my experience falling in love, which means different things to different people, but which I found incredibly inspiring, personally and creatively. My personal mandate for the writing herein was to claim the experience for myself without resorting to a multitude of clichés. I believe I have addressed the sensuality of fear, the terrifying force of love, the unutterable pleasures of true intimacy, and the destruction of emotional and intellectual prisons with an imprint that is undeniably my own. Blammo.”
Of late, Father John Misty and his band have been touring extensively, hitting festivals such as Glastonbury, Coachella and Lollapalooza. They will spend much of August playing European summer festivals, followed by a headline tour that takes in the US, the UK, Europe… and Auckland. This will be a show to remember by a brilliant artist in his prime.
