Nominations now open for 2015 Sportsperson of the Year

Nominations now open for 2015 Sport Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards

Nominations are now open for the annual Wellington Sportsperson of the Year Awards. Organised by Sport Wellington, the prestigious awards are now in their 46th year and aim to celebrate sporting excellence in the Wellington region.

Nominations are open from 8am Friday 27 March until 5pm Friday 24 April and recognise successes between the dates of 23 April 2014 – 7 April 2015. Nominations are welcomed from the general public, sports organisations and the media in the following 12 categories;
Sportsman, Sportswoman, Coach, Team, Disabled Sportsperson, Emerging Sportsman and Emerging Sportswoman, Club, Administrator, Volunteer, Official and Lifetime Achievement.

Nominees must reside in the greater Wellington region, represent a greater Wellington regional-based sports team or be widely regarded as a Wellingtonian.

The awards ceremony will once again see the induction of four new Legends of Wellington sport. Once inducted, plaques honouring their achievements will be installed at the ASB Sports Centre in Kilbirnie.

The supreme award of Wellington Sportsperson of the Year is chosen from all category winners, apart from Personality of the Year and Lifetime Achievement. Last year, basketballer Steven Adams took the top honours for his successful year with the Oklahoma City Thunder, as well as being named Sportsman of the Year. Paralympic swimmer Mary Fisher was named Sportswoman and Disabled Sportsperson of the Year.

“Sport Wellington cannot nominate so we are reliant on the general public, media, sports organisations and clubs to recognise their champions by nominating them in the awards. If you know of someone deserving, get your nominations in now and make sure they don’t miss out” says Event Director James King.

This year’s event will be held at the TSB Bank Arena on 4 June with ticket sales and table bookings available now.
Anyone can nominate at www.wellingtonsportsawards.co.nz or join the debate on Twitter by following @SportWgtn or using the hashtag #WgtnSPOY. Nominations close on Friday 24 April and finalists are announced on 8 May.
