SKYCITY’s Federal Street Festival set to celebrate streetscape

SKYCITY is poised to celebrate the new-look Federal Street with a free public festival kicking off at 4:30pm on Friday, November 7 featuring live entertainment, bars and complimentary tasters cooked by some of Auckland’s best restaurants.

SKYCITY is celebrating the completion of the shared space, which has been transformed into a landscaped, pedestrian-friendly zone along with the Southern Hemisphere’s first circular green, living walls.

The Federal Street Festival will see Federal Delicatessen, Depot, MASU by Nic Watt, Gusto at the Grand, The Grill by Sean Connolly, Bellota and The Sugar Club will each have a stall on the street serving up 4,000 free plates of food given away to members of the public – two free tasters to the first 2000 people - to mark the completion of the new central Auckland shared space.

For those who miss out on the free tasters, each restaurant’s signature dish will be available for $7 from the street stalls. DJs and musicians, including Sola Rosa, will entertain the crowds.

SKYCITY Entertainment Group Chief Executive Nigel Morrison says this joint project with Auckland Council has put the finishing touch to the city’s “foodie street".

“We want to share this fantastic place with Aucklanders so everyone can see how much this area has improved," says Mr Morrison.

“In the past year, we’ve opened four exceptional restaurants in association with world-class chefs Peter Gordon, Al Brown, Nic Watt and Sean Connolly. There really is something for everyone on Federal Street."

The Shared Space project started in August 2013 and has seen the levelling of the pavement, landscaping, and outdoor seating put in place.

“We believe the finished streetscape really compliments not only the SKYCITY entertainment precinct but also re-energises a vital part of the downtown Auckland area. It’s a mark of our commitment to the city,” Mr Morrison said.

Shared spaces give pedestrians the right-of-way, discouraging vehicular access, removing long-term bus and coach bays and creating people-friendly zones.

SKYCITY’s Federal Street Festival will run from 4:30pm to 10pm.
