A LIVE SILENT FILM EXPERIENCE UNFOLDING BEFORE YOUR EYES
Auckland Live in association with Battersea Arts Centre presents
The Paper Cinema's Odyssey
Direct from London’s Battersea Arts Centre comes the bewitching show that has charmed audiences all over the world with its unique style of live animation and music: The Paper Cinema's Odyssey plays Wednesday 29 October – Saturday 1 November, live at the Lower NZI, Aotea Centre.
At its heart, The Paper Cinema’s Odyssey is a story about one family and their relationships - a husband's efforts to make it home to his wife, a wife's endeavour to hold out till her husband's return, while their son grows up. The Paper Cinema team was drawn to this ripping good yarn filled with monsters and adventure as well as the intimate themes of love, caring and understanding.
Homer’s cornerstone of literature is vividly told with beautiful illustration and masterful puppetry. Cinematic projection and cunning tricks transform a suitcase full of cut-out paper puppets into an
array of living characters and striking landscapes. A silent film is created before your eyes, set to a captivating live score from exceptional musicians.
“Ingenious retelling of Homer’s Story” The Guardian
The Paper Cinema was founded in 2004 by Nicholas Rawling, with Imogen Charleston and Christopher Reed. They tour bespoke pieces extensively through the UK and this work has gone further afield to Brazil, America, Indonesia and Paris. The company uses the language of animation, music, film and theatre to lead the viewer through a variety of stories. Intricate pen and ink illustrations are manipulated in real-time in front of a live video camera and projected onto the big screen alongside a live band, which is integral to the work. Rawling told The Guardian “I sometimes refer to it as illustrated song or an exploded comic book."
“An epic, imaginative voyage” Time Out London
Touted by the Guardian as ‘Britain’s Most Influential Theatre’ Battersea Arts Centre nurtures talented and emerging artists and is renowned for making some of the most cutting-edge new work in the UK. Battersea Arts Centre champions theatre that blurs genres, challenges our view of the world and thrives on experiments.
“Brings the story’s excitement to life in a way that makes you remember just how good it is”
The Scotsman
