Events announced for Breakaway Festival of Cycling in Upper Hutt
Upper Hutt’s annual cycle festival is about to kick off with events and fun for all ages.
UPPER HUTT, Wellington NZ, 20 AUG 2014—The programme for Breakaway Festival of Cycling 2014 has been announced and it
offers something for everyone in Upper Hutt this September.
In its second year the Breakaway Festival of Cycling gives cyclists of all ages and abilities the opportunity to try
some of the diverse and challenging trails and cycleways of cycle-friendly Upper Hutt while taking part in fun events.
There are three major festival events on during the weekends, as well as a number of smaller events run by local cycling
clubs intended to offer people the opportunity to have a go at a new mode of cycling.
Downhill Mountain Biking, BMX, Track Cycling, Cross Country Mountain Biking and Cyclocross introductory sessions/events
are all on offer, and entry to most events is free.
Natalie Finnigan, Breakaway Festival Coordinator, says, “Once again the cycling clubs in Upper Hutt and throughout the
region have come together to offer an exciting and diverse range of events to the public.”
“Upper Hutt City Council is thrilled to be able to present such a fantastic festival programme to the people of the
greater Wellington region.”
Many of the events have limited spaces available, so Ms Finnigan encourages everyone interested in taking part to visit http://www.breakaway.org.nz/ and register online early.
The first festival event kicks off on Wednesday 3 of September and the last is on Sunday 28 September.
The programme includes:
The Breakaway Family Fest – A ‘carnival’ like celebration of all things cycling at Harcourt Park, proudly supported by The Breeze. This event is
suitable for the whole family, and features a ‘decorate your bike’ competition for the kids, a family ride around the
riverbank led by Activation, cycle skills sessions for the kids with Pedal Ready, inflatable bouncy toys, games, free
face painting and a free BBQ.
Cyclocross Corporate Challenge – A relay event organised by Huttcross with free entry for teams of up to six. The event is open to all businesses,
organisations and clubs throughout the region, and fierce but friendly competition is encouraged. Challenge your
friends, colleagues and competitors to take you on at Harcourt Park. No experience in cyclocross is necessary. Prizes on
offer for the winners, as well as the ‘best team uniform’, and best team name.
Downhill Shuttle Day – A free downhill mountain-biking event organised by Wellington Downhill Mountain Biking Club at Maidstone Park. Free
shuttles will be running all day to the top of the track. Free transport will be provided for riders and their bikes
from Wellington and home again. Lunch provided.
Youthtown ‘Amazing Race’ Cycle Competition – A family event based on the Amazing Race competition format where riders will be grouped in teams to hunt for clues
and complete challenges throughout the course at Trentham Memorial Park.
Mountain Bike Night Ride – A high-adrenalin, fast-paced group ride in the dark on an off-road course at the Tunnel Gully reserve in Te Marua.
