Whakaipo Bay Tree Planting
Log it in your smartphone; mark in on your calendar, your diary or your Outlook calendar whatever works for you – rain
or shine there’s another wonderful Greening Taupō event coming up on Sunday 17 August and everyone is welcome – bring a
spade, your gumboots, gardening gloves if you need them and be prepared for a grand morning out at one of Taupō’s jewels
– Whakaipo Bay.
Greening Taupō, in partnership with the Department of Conservation, is organizing this popular annual tree-planting
event, now in its 26th year. The planting kicks off at 10 am and in keeping with tradition will end with a sausage
sizzle at the Girl Guide’s Whakaipo Bay camp.
Planting at Whakaipo Bay began along the foreshore in 1988 mainly to protect against erosion. In 2011 the project became
one of 28 community plantings to benefit from the national Living Legends programme which is now under the umbrella of
Project Crimson. Whakaipo Bay is one of only six out of the original 28 to have its funding continued and has just
received an additional and most welcome bonus from the Tindall Foundation, who will fund $5000 annually for the next
three years.
Whakaipo Bay is a ten minute drive out of Taupō, with access off Mapara Road and the event will be sign posted with
Greening Taupō banners.
