Kiwi star in wartime epic
Kiwi actress Antonia Prebble says she considered it an honour to play nurse Hilda Steele in the upcoming Prime TV drama ANZAC Girls.
In an exclusive interview with vintage lifestyle magazine Glory Days for its WWI centenary issue, she said she felt these strong women of wartime were the unsung heroes of the ANZAC story.
“They were so young, inexperienced, unworldly -- and thrown into dangerous situations. They had the most extraordinary
capacity for compassion and would work tirelessly for days on end."
ANZAC Girls is a co-production between Screentime and the Australian Broadcasting Corporation which will be screening as a six-part
mini series on Prime TV later in the year.
Sir Peter Jackson talked to Glory Days about his passion for the past and subsequent involvement in recreating WWI uniforms for soldiers and nurses. He admits
he even used the New Zealand company Hills Hats, that made the original soldiers hats in 1914, in his reproduction
uniforms. Glory Days also features a story about Sir Peter's fleet of war-era planes that have been meticulously reconstructed at The
Vintage Aviator, his aircraft factory business based in Masterton.
Elsewhere in the magazine, Glory Days joins forces with the New Zealand Fashion Museum to feature The Way We Wore – In Service and On The Street in WWI and WWII.
Co-editor Rose Jackson says “The aim was to collect a broad range of images from the time that offers a view of what
life was like during those tumultuous times – from those who were posted overseas to serve their country, to civilians
who kept the home fires burning.”
After a public request for images, this online and in print exhibition brings to light photographs from the attics and
old suitcases of New Zealanders that were taken during the wartime periods 1914 – 1918 and 1939 – 1945.
Issue 8 of Glory Days also features regular columns, including vintage fashion, classic cars, rockabilly culture, beauty, music and more.
