Sir Peter Jackson joins CreationFest, 2014 winners announced
Supreme award winner, Ross Dunn in his Legacy creation
Passion and creativity took centre stage on Saturday night at the CreationFest gala awards show at the historic Blue
Baths in Rotorua, where top entrants from Wearable Art, Short Film and Live Performance categories were awarded for
their creative offerings.
Other big news from the CreationFest gala awards was the announcement that Sir Peter Jackson would be involved in the
Short Film section at next year’s event.
CreationFest film coordinator, John Callen, says next year the film section will be bigger and better, including the
involvement of Sir Peter Jackson.
“When we approached him to judge this year's entries he said he was too busy finishing the third Hobbit film, The Battle
of the Five Armies. However, we can announce that in 2015 there will be a Sir Peter Jackson Award for outstanding work
in any one aspect of any of the final film entries, to be decided by Sir Peter himself.”
The inaugural CreationFest show builds on the previous Wearable Creationz event, with this year’s coveted Wearable Art
Supreme Award presented to local entrant Ross Dunn for his ‘Legacy’ creation.
Winners from the five wearable categories, who each won $500, were eligible for the Supreme Award. Mr Dunn’s creation,
which featured in the Moving Parts category, is his fifth foray into the wearable event and Saturday night saw him
awarded his third Supreme Award.
Legacy, the 2.2m tall silver insect with complete moving parts, saw Mr Dunn win two tickets to New York, including 10
nights’ accommodation and $1000 spending money thanks to supreme sponsor, House of Travel.
Wearable judge Terry Wheeler, who has been involved with the show’s predecessor, Wearable Creationz, from the very
beginning, said this year’s entrants were of an exceptionally high calibre.
“I’ve been involved in the event for the past 11 years and this year the pieces on stage were right up there. There
wasn’t a lot of difference between first, second and third, and the passion, heart and soul people of all ages had
obviously put into their creations was just amazing.”
He says Mr Dunn’s piece was exceptionally creative and well made, from concept, to fitting the criteria, through to how
it moved on stage.
Top talent was also recognised in the Live Performance category, with Daniel La’aiva, a 15 year old dancer from Tokoroa,
awarded the Youth Aptitude Award in recognition of his natural talent, passion, commitment and determination to succeed
in the performing arts.
The Short Film Supreme Award winner was ‘Wish you were hear’ by Team Tap That, who received two tickets to Melbourne,
four double passes to the Melbourne Film Festival, four nights’ accommodation and $500 spending money thanks to House of
Travel.
