The Auckland Hearts will start a new season with a new coach in the form of Elfriede Chooi who has been appointed to
take the reins for the 2014/15 season.
Chooi takes over a side that are current domestic twenty20 champions and that have made five out of six finals in the
last three seasons, winning two titles along the way.
Building on that kind of success and continuing to grow the team ethos that was started under her predecessor Haidee
Tiffen are two of the key points that Chooi will be focusing on.
“I think the Hearts have done a great job of starting to build a title winning culture in recent years and my goal is to
develop that further. We have a fantastic bunch of players and some real depth in quality, so I’m really looking forward
to working with the team.”
Chooi has an extensive playing career for the Hearts behind her having 12 years of domestic cricket experience with 11
for Auckland. In recent times she has been in charge of the multi title winning Takapuna Women’s Premier team and was
coach of the Auckland U18 Women’s side that competed in the Australian National Championships last season.
High Performance Manager Paul MacKinnon is pleased with the appointment and excited about what Chooi will bring to the
role.
“Elfriede has a vast amount of experience and will bring some unique qualities to the Hearts environment. She’s very
passionate about the Hearts and about continuing the success they’ve had recently which I think makes her a great fit
and means we can continue to build on what the Hearts have achieved.”
Chooi will take up the role immediately and work with the Hearts winter training squad before a summer squad is
announced in October. The 2014/15 Women’s domestic season dates have yet to be finalised.
