NZ Age Group Netball Championships
NZU17: Day One Update
Media Advisory
14 July
The New Zealand Netball team made a surprise appearance at the New Zealand Age Group Championships Under 17 tournament
at Netball North Harbour this afternoon ahead of their departure to the UK this evening.
Playing in thick foggy conditions all day, 40 Netball Centre teams from all over the country opened their campaigns for
the four-day tournament, all vying for the Anna Rowberry Cup which will be contested on Thursday afternoon. Christchurch
are the current NZU17 Champions, winning the Championships in Hawke’s Bay in 2013.
For many U17 players, the highlight of the day was catching a glimpse of the NZ Netball team ahead of their final
training session at home before departing for the Commonwealth Games. The team made their way around the courts,
stretching their legs before the long-haul flight to the UK, which follows an official farewell function in Auckland in
the evening.
Another familiar face in the crowd supporting her daughter Bianca in the Wellington team at the Under 17’s today was
Irene van Dyk.
The Tournament is the biggest on the NNZ calendar and is the first time school age players get the opportunity to come
under the scrutiny of Netball New Zealand Emerging Talent selectors.
Eight pools consisting of five teams will compete over the next few days, before the top teams start to emerge.
The U17 Age Group event provides players a development pathway and the chance to challenge themselves and showcase their
netball talent to their peers, opposition and the Selectors. It is also a vital step in development for coaches and
umpires – many of whom are attending their first national event.
The New Zealand Age Group Championships U17 continue through until Thursday at Netball North Harbour in Northcote on
Auckland’s North Shore. Entry is free of charge
