Whangarei athlete claims regional title
20 athletes from across the North Island descended on Hamilton looking for crucial ranking points to help their chances
ahead of the National Championships later this year.
Despite sending a small team of three to battle for regional honours this year, the Northland Boccia club still managed
to take home the spoils.
After topping his group in pool play, New Zealand number one Scott Burdett was too strong for the rest of the
competition en route to claiming the gold medal in the Kiwi grade.
“Scott has dominated the grade for the best part of the last decade and has consistently brings a high standard each
tournament” said Boccia New Zealand Director Luke Morriss.
“I’m happy to go the tournament without dropping a game” said Burdett. “My semi-final was much closer than I would have
liked but I managed to save my best for last in the final (12-1) against long-time rival Khi Chung Chen from Auckland”.
Boccia is a sport designed for individuals with physical impairments and is best described as an indoor version of
petanque with soft leather balls. The aim of the game is to get as many of your coloured balls as close as possible to
the jack while preventing the opposition from doing the same.
