Canoeing to be ‘Official Sport’ of World Masters Games 2017
Canoeing has become an ‘Official Sport’ of World Masters Games 2017 joining 27 other sporting codes in this exciting event, which anticipates participation numbers of around 25,000.
The canoeing programme will include five disciplines – flatwater (sprint, marathon, ocean racing), canoe polo, canoe slalom, dragon boat racing, and waka ama. Para categories will also be offered.
A ‘canoe hub’ based on the North Shore will offer a wide range of paddling events, with canoe slalom being contested at a satelite slalom specific white-water venue.
Maree Burnett, Secretary General of the New Zealand Canoeing Federation said she was delighted to have five of the Federation’s canoe discipline organisations working together to create what will be a week-long paddling extravaganza.
“The canoeing programme at World Masters Games 2017 will showcase to New Zealander’s and our international visitors what a truly diverse and exciting experience canoeing can offer paddlers and spectators alike. We’re thrilled to be part of this world class event .”
A working committee consisting of key people from each of these canoe disciplines is already in place and working collaboratively with World Masters Games 2017 to ensure that all paddlers will enjoy a quality experience on and off the water.
