Mingling the Mixes is a not-for-profit community projected that was created from doing a course called Self Expression Leadership program. This is a bi-annual event that aims to bring together couples of intercultural background in New Zealand to celebrate different cultures, diversity and empower them through their challenges with fun, food and connection.
This a project about Love, Connection and Empowerment.
Developed by Lina La, a New Zealand-born Chinese who is married to a German, Mingling the Mixes is a project that derived from the Self Expression Leadership programme which aims to empower people to create projects within their communities which are important to them. For Lina, the growing number of New Zealanders in intercultural relationships or are part of a family dynamic with different cultures have been a challenge, including herself. Many couples would have seen the challenges, particularly around the family, where they need to overcome.
While the issue may have been explored on films and on documentaries, there needs to be more. Getting connection, support and empowerment is important to Lina.
This event is held biannually and the first one will be held at the New Lynn Community Centre. “I am hoping to have 100 people (50 couples) attending the event on the day,” says La. “And we hope they will take a sense of empowerment, love and connection away from it.”
“The intention would be to make a positive impact to these couples/people and their lives so they can create friendships and a network to stay connected for support in the future.”
La is looking at this event becoming a national event and having a life of its own and continues into the future and making a difference for the community.
The event will be held Sunday 20 July 2014 from 11am to 4pm at New Lynn Community Centre, 45 Totara Avenue, New Lynn. For more information, please visit the Facebook page: http://www.facebook.com/MinglingtheMixes.
