ASTON RD SESSIONS
THOMAS OLIVER - 'BOY' (live)
Aston Rd is delighted to present the first 'Aston Rd Sessions' featuring Thomas Oliver.
The Aston Rd Sessions were recorded and filmed in front of a live audience over three consecutive nights in the heart of Wellington city in May. Each night featured one local artist, Louis Baker, Thomas Oliver and Estère, who performed a selection of new and previously released songs.
Leading the sessions is Thomas Oliver who released his debut solo album last year, 'Beneath the Weissenborn', an all instrumental, all Weissenborn record which debuted at #8 on the album charts to critical acclaim and established him as one of the world's leading Weissenborn players.
On this session, he performs an unreleased song called ‘Boy’. Thomas says of ‘Boy’, "Boy is a song about becoming an adult, and looking back and trying to work out the point at which it happened. The song attempts to attribute it to things in my life that "hardened" me. But I still can't work it out, because I still feel the same as I did when I was 16. And I probably always will."

Fans of the artists applied for the opportunity to be a part of an intimate and exclusive audience of fifty only at a secret location which was revealed on the day of the show. The venue was the Blue Barn Studio in Newtown, which was a unique opportunity for many of the fans to be in a working recording studio and were treated to an open discussion between the artist and local and loved music Journalist Martyn Pepperell before the performance.
"There's something magical about bringing a small group of people together to sit on the floor, drink wine, and LISTEN to music. Some songs hide away in dark corners of bars and noisy venues, too afraid to show themselves. But they shine bright and true when everyone in the room is hanging off their every word. I could have played for hours and hours and hours.", says Thomas.
The Aston Rd Sessions team was made up of talented young Wellington creatives, and local artisans Parrot Dog Beer, Tommy Millions, and the Gypsy Kitchen supported the shows with local treats.
Further sessions will be revealed in coming weeks with performances by Estère, Louis Baker and more from Thomas Oliver.
