Institute of Masters of Wine Hosts
Inaugural Master Class in New Zealand
The Institute of Masters of Wine (IMW) is holding an MW Master Class, an open day event, in Auckland on Monday, 18 August 2014 to raise awareness of its
study programme in Australasia and to provide information to prospective students. The next MW study programme begins in
November 2014, with applications to be submitted by 1 September.
The one-day event to be held at the Villa Maria Winery, Mangere, Auckland will include:
• a presentation on the Institute’s history, values, study programme and examination
• a tasting to demonstrate the MW approach and enable candidates to understand the skills required to undertake the
programme, and
• a theory workshop to demonstrate the breadth and depth of the syllabus
The Master Class will be hosted by a good number of New Zealand based Masters of Wine, including Alastair Maling MW,
Simon Nash MW, Jane Skilton MW, Paul Tudor MW, Steve Bennett MW, Michael Brajkovich MW and Emma Jenkins MW, who
collectively will provide genuine insight into the programme and what it takes to become an MW.
Alastair Maling MW, said: "This will be a great chance to meet seven Masters of Wine and learn about the benefits that
come with the title. The Study Programme is a demanding and rewarding journey, but the Institute is principally a
Membership organisation, not an examining body. We will be talking not just about the career benefits and opportunities
for self-development that membership of the Institute brings, but also about the sheer fun and enjoyment of being part
of a global network of like-minded people. We're looking forward to meeting delegates in Auckland and sharing our
stories."

is a brilliant opportunity for us to meet New Zealand wine professionals, and for them to learn about the MW study

The Institute of Masters of Wine is a membership organisation with 313 members in 26 countries, and with a student body
of 300-plus students in 36 countries. The Institute promotes professional excellence, interaction and learning across
all sectors of the global wine community. To become a Member of the Institute, candidates follow a self-study programme
for a minimum of three years before completing all three parts of the Master of Wine examination: theory, practical and
research papers. New Zealand has nine Masters of Wine and Australia, 16.
