Domestic In Nature: Contemporary jewellery exhibition
Domestic In Nature, a solo exhibition of contemporary jewellery objects by Whitireia Visual Arts and Design student Fran Carter, presents
jewellery objects made in response to an investigation into the nature and role of domestic life in modern times.
Fran says “The nature of the domestic has been of relevance to me since day one. From how we are raised, to the roles we
are expected to perform and through my past work as a nanny; home life is a constant source of “food- for- thought” to
me.”
In this exhibition you can expect to discover jewellery objects made from plastic bags, bread tags and also recycled
aluminium teapots and pans; classic kiwi staples of the kitchen from the mid twentieth century that the artist has used
in the casting process to create the forms she has first carved or moulded from wax. In addition the use of kitchen
sponges and rubber gloves introduces a quirky burst of colour that makes these pieces ‘pop’.
“I want this jewellery to present a fun side to the often undervalued status domestic life has associations with. I
believe finding ways to bring joy to whatever you do, no matter how menial the task can help us to make peace with our
situation, which can sometimes be beyond our control.”
Domestic In Nature opens Wednesday July 2nd until Tuesday 8th at The Outer Space, run by Occupation: Artist. Located at The Wellington
Trades Hall opposite the School of Architecture, 126 Vivian Street, level 2, unit 27. Open daily from 11am -6pm with
