Provoking Thought through Talanoa Theatre
A new theatre piece produced by Auckland based Pacific health provider Village Collective aims to reinforce the
importance of Talanoa in creating supportive environments for young Pacific people to thrive and make good life choices.
The one hour piece entitled Talanoa: Full Disclosure without Concealment is a collection of five monologues reflecting some of the stories and experiences of young people.
“Academic Sitiveni Halapua sees talanoa as involving frank expression without concealment in face-to-face dialogue, says
Village Collective General Manager, Robert Muller. “He also talks about Talanoa being a gradual process that builds and
rebuilds a better understanding and is done openly, sensibly and reasonably over time and space.”
“In a similar way, our notion of ‘Talanoa Theatre’ does not attempt to pose or suggest a solution. Rather it’s about
provoking thought and discussion for audiences to consider their role in talanoa amongst their family, friends and
community; and how the process can support young people.”
“The five monologues reflect some of what young people are going through and echo some of the sentiments young people
are sharing with our health promotion team.”
“Ultimately everything we do at Village Collective is about raising a generation of young Pacific people who are
confident in themselves and make great life choice. The key to this are the relationships and communciations lines young
people have with our peers, family and community.
The theatre piece will be performed at the Mangere Arts Centre for two nights only on the 13th and 14th of June.
