Silostay at Little River takes the number one spot
Travel writer Pippy McCurdy has compiled this year’s list of the eight most unique places to spend a night in New
Zealand as a result of research for her latest book ‘Amazing Overnighters’.
Topping the list of New Zealand’s most amazing stays for 2014 is recently opened Silostay in Little River on the road to
Akaroa.
A yurt, a tree house, a haunted hotel, and a hobbit hole all make the list.
The full list is as follows:
1 – The Grain Silos Silostay Little River
Silostay at Little River takes the number one spot with its astonishing transformation of eight everyday grain silos
into absolutely breath-taking accommodation. Instantly admired within New Zealand, this brand new metallic village is
already making waves internationally .Staying in one of these gleaming cylinders is the experience of a lifetime . Its
bespoke excellence cannot be overstated.
2 - The Tree House - Birdsong Lodge
A sleep-out attached to a luxury lodge, this funky treehouse perches precariously on a giant tree stump. Hand crafted
and one of a kind! This is kiwi originality at its best.
3 –The Yurt Aniwaniwa Yurt Stay
This Mongolian style canvas yurt perched high on a steep hillside like an eagle’s nest , is simple yet absolutely
unique. The under-the-stars shower overlooking the bush-clad hillside is the icing on the cake.
4 - The Hobbit Motel Woodlyn Park
A middle-earth mindblower! Buried into the hillside with donkeys grazing on the roof this is the original hobbit motel -
the first in New Zealand. Bilbo Baggins would have loved it.
5 – The Haunted Hotel The Vulcan Hotel
Maybe you too will be visited by The Rose who is known to haunt this historic hotel which dates back to the gold mining
era. Whether you see the ghost or not, this old-world overnight stay is unforgettable.
6 - The Church Hidden Valley Lodge
The church, the pews, the stained glass windows, the pulpit, - it’s all there in this West Coast relocated church. Wekas
on the doorstep and a Swedish hot tub as well.
7 – The Hippie Hideaway Golden Bay Hideaway
A hippie house truck overlooking an isolated bay. This house truck is all about back to nature –from composting toilet
to its hilltop bath. The peace sign on the entrance door says it all.
8 -The Gypsy Carriage Akupe Cottage and Gypsy Carriage
This carriage on wheels is a colour-fest of satins and brocades just waiting for its horses to be hitched up and on the
road again.
