William Shakespeare’s KING LEAR comes to the MTG Century Theatre
In association with National Theatre Live, MTG Hawke’s Bay will be screening a limited season of the National Theatre’s critically acclaimed production of King Lear from 14 – 21 June at the MTG Century Theatre.
Academy Award winner Sam Mendes (Skyfall, American Beauty) returns to the National Theatre to direct long-time collaborator Simon Russell Beale (Timon of Athens) in the title role of Shakespeare’s tragedy.
An aged king decides to divide his kingdom between his three daughters, according to which of them is most eloquent in praising him. His favourite, Cordelia, says nothing. Lear’s world descends into chaos.
UK critics have praised this new production with The Guardian proclaiming “Simon Russell Beale is magnetic. An exceptional production,” while Time Out describes the cast as “…beyond superlative. A literally awe-inspiring production.”
